Built on the original structures of a former Dominican monastery of the 15th century, San Domenico Palace was transformed into a hotel in 1896 by the descendants Damiano Rosso, its founder and a Catanian nobleman of the princely family Rosso di Altavilla. He built and then donated the monastery to the friars when he himself embraced the monastic life. The San Domenico Palace has become the most famous monastery-hotel in the world. Reminders of monastic life are religiously preserved at the San Domenico, testifying to a past that makes this structure unique: the cloister, the images of the Saints, the choir stall, the sacristy, the lovely garden, the rooms that were once silent cells of seclusion. A luxury hotel within ancient walls where everything recalls monastic life creates a startling contrast, but it is all the more fascinating for this reason. From the beginning, the fascination of San Domenico has attracted poets, writers, movie stars, royal families and Heads of State, all of whom have filled the ancient pages of the jealously guarded Golden Book with their dedications.
